A Parent’s Nightmare: Social Networking!
Speakers: Brian Niles and two high school students
Brian Niles, Haddonfield parent and expert on the use of the Internet by today’s youth, will provide insights into the social networking craze our sons and daughters have embraced – specifically Facebook, Myspace, Flickr, Youtube and other popular sites. Today’s web-savvy, marketing-averse, instant gratification and connection seeking generation are daily visiting websites that many parents have never used. We’ll review what these social networking sites are, how students today are using them, how parents can get an account, what to look for, how to protect your kids by looking for the warning signs of what they post online and finally better understanding the positive aspects of social networking and how you and your kids can participate together.
Brian Niles is the CEO of TargetX, an interactive marketing firm serving over 800 colleges and universities since 1998. He regularly speaks to organizations and at conferences on the subject of communicating with today’s “Millennial” generation. For prospective college students, his company recently launched MyCampusVisits.com – a free search engine of over 1,000 college admission open house events. Brian has a master’s degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania, worked in higher education (administration and faculty) for 15 years, and has owned and run TargetX for the past 10 years.
After Brian speaks, two students will also speak about social networking. Then we will open for discussion.
Note: It is recommended that parents watch a video “Web 2.0” developed by Michael Welsch at Kansas State University, prior to attending this event. It has been watched over 3 million times since created and is located on YouTube at http://youtube.com/watch?v=6gmP4nk0EOE.
